Built 1613–1618 · UNESCO-listed
The best-preserved fortifications in Europe and the only unbroken walls in Ireland. Walk the full mile atop 26-foot ramparts that have never been breached.

The city’s most photographed building, a red-sandstone civic palace with a soaring clock tower and some of the finest stained glass in Ireland, overlooking the Peace Bridge and the Foyle.

The city begins as a monastic settlement on an oak-grove hill by the Foyle, Doire, “the oak grove,” gives Derry its name.
During the Plantation of Ulster, London guilds build the great walls to protect the new city. The ramparts are finished by 1618.

I'm your guide
Your guide to the Walled City
I'm Andrew, born and raised within a stone's throw of these walls. For over a decade I've been walking visitors through Derry's streets, telling the stories that shaped not just this city but the whole island of Ireland.
I don't do dry dates-and-facts tours. Expect siege legends and civil-rights history, murals and music, the odd tall tale, and always time for a pint and a proper chat afterwards. This is my home, let me show you why we love it.
