Built 1613–1618 · UNESCO-listed
Some of the best-preserved fortifications in Europe and the only unbroken walls in Ireland. Walk the full mile atop 26-foot ramparts that have never been breached.
Completed 1890 · Neo-Gothic
The city’s most photographed building, a red-sandstone civic palace with a soaring clock tower and some of the finest stained glass in Ireland, overlooking the Peace Bridge and the Foyle.
Opened 2011 · River Foyle
An S-shaped footbridge that tells a story of a divided city reaching across the water, linking the walled city with the regenerated Ebrington Square.

From an oak-grove monastery to UK City of Culture, the moments that made Derry.
The city begins as a monastic settlement on an oak-grove hill by the Foyle, Doire, “the oak grove,” gives Derry its name.
During the Plantation of Ulster, London guilds build the great walls to protect the new city. The ramparts are finished by 1618.
Thirteen apprentice boys shut the gates against the approaching army. The 105-day siege that follows is the longest in British history.
Derry becomes the crucible of the Northern Ireland civil rights movement. The events of Bloody Sunday in 1972 mark one of the darkest days of the Troubles.
Peace comes to the North. Derry begins a remarkable transformation from frontier city to cultural capital.

I'm Andrew, born and bred in this city just a stone's throw from the historic city walls. For a few years now, I've been leading walking tours through this fascinating city, sharing the history, stories and characters that have shaped Derry and the wider island of Ireland.
My guided walking tours bring Derry's past to life. From the famous Siege of Derry and the city's remarkable walls to the civil rights movement, the Bogside murals and local music, you'll discover the events that made this city what it is today.
I believe history should be entertaining. On my tours, expect fascinating stories, local humour, the occasional tall tale and plenty of opportunities to ask questions along the way. After the tour, there's always time for a pint or a bun and a proper chin wag.
